As Jim noted in today?s Morning Jolt (you should subscribe if you don?t), San Diego?s mayor Bob Filner issued an apology yesterday after being publicly accused of sexual harassment and intimidation of female employees:
The mayor had been under siege for two days after his political allies went public with unspecified allegations that Filner had sexually harassed ?numerous? women, including city employees. They called on him to resign from office.
?As someone who has spent a lifetime fighting for equality for all people, I am embarrassed to admit that I have failed to fully respect the women who work for me and with me, and that at times I have intimidated them,? Filner said. ?It?s a good thing that behavior that would have been tolerated in the past is being called out in this generation for what it is: inappropriate and wrong.?
Filner, 70, said he has begun working with professionals to change his behavior and approach.
?I am also humbled to admit that I need help,? he said.
Filner doesn?t seem inclined to heed the calls for his resignation. ?I only ask,? he says in the video statement, ?that you give me an opportunity to prove I am capable of change, so that the vision I have for our city?s future can be realized.?
He promises that ?my staff and I will participate in sexual-harassment training provided by the city,? and assures his viewers that, ?I fully understand that only I am the one who can make these changes. If my behavior doesn?t change, I cannot succeed in leading our city.?
