Green River Killer Case: More Remains Tied To Gary Ridgway Identified

SEATTLE, June 18 (Reuters) - Remains of a woman killed by Gary Ridgway, the "Green River Killer" convicted of killing 49 women, were identified 30 years after she went missing thanks to DNA evidence provided by her family, authorities said on Monday.
Cold case detectives with the King County Sheriff's Department identified the previously unnamed remains of one of Ridgway's victims as Sandra Denise Major, whose body was found in the Mountain View Cemetery in Auburn, Washington, about 30 miles southeast of Seattle on Dec. 30, 1985.
Major was identified through DNA provided by a cousin who contacted the sheriff's office in April after watching a made-for-television movie about the Green River murders.
Family members living in Rochester, New York had suspected that the missing family member may have been a Ridgway victim, according to Ian Goodhew, a King County prosecutor originally assigned to the chilling cases.
Major had moved to the Seattle area from Rochester, but her family was unaware of where she had gone.
"She had disappeared," Goodhew said.
Major's family said they last saw the young woman in New York in 1982 and "were aware of the lifestyle Sandra lived but she was still part of our family," they said in a written statement issued by the King County Sheriff's Department.
"We received a letter from her in 1982 with a Seattle postmark but no return address," Major's family said. "We never heard from her again and did not know what happened to her."
Ridgway "did confess to this woman's homicide, but he didn't know her name," Goodhew said. "Evidence does suggest that she was working as a prostitute."
After Major's family members submitted DNA to police in New York, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children helped to expedite processing of the samples, police said.
A friend who reported Major, then 20, missing on December 24, 1982 law saw her get into a truck, the department said.
The remains of Major were found about three years later in a dump site down a steep slope across from the cemetery, according to a prosecutor's summary of the case evidence.
Ridgway is serving a life prison term without the possibility of parole at Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla.
Under a plea deal Ridgway made in 2003, he was spared the death penalty in exchange for confessing to all of the murders linked to him at the time or any that were later discovered.
Ridgway has confessed to nearly 70 murders, most of his victims young female prostitutes or runaways. He was dubbed the Green River killer because the bodies of several of his victims in the early 1980s were found in or near the river, which runs through south King County.
Major was found near the bodies of two other women. One was identified as Kimi-Kai Pitsor, whose skull was found at the site in December 1983, and the other, "Bones 17," remains unidentified, according to court documents. (Editing by Mary Slosson and Eric Walsh)

Facebook suggests Nasdaq glitches led to decline

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook is suggesting that trading problems at the Nasdaq Stock Market contributed to a sharp drop in the company's stock price after its initial public offering.

In laying out a defense against dozens of lawsuits from disgruntled shareholders, Facebook and the banks overseeing the IPO also insist that nothing about its IPO process was illegal or even out of the ordinary.

The defense came in a court filing in which Facebook and the banks, led by Morgan Stanley, are seeking to combine the more than 40 federal and state lawsuits around the country into one federal case in New York.

The highly anticipated IPO was marred by technical glitches that delayed trading when Facebook went public on May 18.

Facebook said those glitches at Nasdaq hurt its stock for days. Seven of the lawsuits claim that Nasdaq errors created market uncertainty and caused shareholders to lose money. Nasdaq has admitted that there were technical problems. Nasdaq spokesman Joe Christinat declined to comment Friday.

The bulk of the shareholder lawsuits ? 28 ? center on Facebook's May 9 disclosure that the number of mobile users it has was growing faster than revenue. The lawsuits claim that analysts at those banks had discussions with Facebook after May 9 and had lowered their forecasts as a result, but disclosed the changes only to a handful of preferred clients.

In its filing late Thursday, Facebook said the lawsuits "ignore that what Facebook and (the banks) allegedly did both followed customary practices and did not violate any rules."

"As is customary," Facebook said, the May 9 filing "did not include any forward-looking projections." In other words, Facebook did not give a revenue or profit forecast in its amended filing, nor did it do so in any other IPO document. Facebook added that federal regulators do not require companies to give earnings or revenue projections in their IPO documents.

Facebook said it wants to bring the lawsuits to New York in part because that's the home to most of the banks involved in the IPO. It's also where many of the events in dispute took place and where Nasdaq is headquartered.

In separate filings with regulators Friday, Facebook released letters it exchanged with the Securities and Exchange Commission in the months leading up to IPO. That's something companies typically do after a confidentiality period ends.

Among other things, federal regulators had wanted to know more about the revenue it gets from mobile devices, its $1 billion deal to buy Instagram and the control CEO Mark Zuckerberg has over the company. Facebook amended its regulatory documents several times before the IPO, but the communications leading to those changes weren't public until now.

On an upbeat note, Facebook's stock gained value for the week for the first time. The stock climbed $1.72, or 6.1 percent, to close at $30.01 on Friday. That's up nearly 11 percent for the week, though it's still down 21 percent from its IPO price of $38.

Also on Friday, Facebook's chief technology officer, Bret Taylor, announced that he is leaving the company to work on a startup. Taylor said on his Facebook profile that he's "sad to be leaving, but I'm excited to be starting a company with my friend Kevin Gibbs." Taylor joined Facebook in 2009 when the company bought FriendFeed, the Internet company where he was working at the time.

This is arguably the lowest form of scamming ? appealing to your good side in an effort to make a few bucks. The worst examples occur in the wake of a disaster, as vultures descend to capitalize on everybody's grief. Unfortunately, charity scammers don't only strike when times are bad.

Fortunately, it's easy to avoid becoming a victim by adhering to one simple rule: Never make donations over the phone, no matter how nicely the caller may ask and how tempting the reward. No charity will run a phone-only fundraiser, so ask the caller to please point you to a website with more information. If it's a legitimate organization, this won't be a problem.

2. Law and order
Another popular phone scam preys on the human desire to escape trouble, whatever the cost. The caller tells you that there is an outstanding warrant for your arrest and that you must pay a fine right now or risk a jail term. You'll have to provide your credit card details for an over-the-phone payment and perhaps a few personal details for "identity verification." Your full name, date of birth and Social Security number will suffice ? in other words, just enough for someone to commit identity fraud.

There are a couple of variations of this scam that have done the rounds recently, striking drivers who have allegedly incurred red light camera fines?or penalizing struggling Americans who have taken out short-term loans.?Callers will often know a startling amount of information about you, but it won't necessarily all add up. Listen closely for errors in what callers say, and always ask for more information. Keep in mind that debt collectors do not have the power to arrest anyone! Get a contact name and phone number, and ask to call them back. Then call your local police station and report them, rather than the other way around.

3. Winning big
Whether it's an around-the-world trip, a new car?or a pile of cash, getting a call saying you've won something is pretty exciting ? exciting enough, perhaps, to give away your personal information and bank details, compromising your family's safety. That'll bring you back down to earth quickly.

Taking inspiration from the classic Nigerian prince scam, this sort of prize-winning hoax is a doozy. The caller claims that you have won something so incredible that it doesn't matter that you cannot remember entering the lottery. Because you don't have the winning ticket, however, you'll need to prove your identity, so please hand over your full name, address, date of birth and Social Security number. 4. Work at home
It sounds like the best thing in the world ? a phone call offering you a job to work from home. You'll only need to put in a little effort, but the payoff is huge. It sounds so great that you don't really think much about how the caller got your number or how they knew you were out of work.

This scam pops up fairly frequently in email inboxes, but it occurs over the phone as well. Generally, you will be required to make an initial investment to secure your employment. You can do that by either handing over your credit card details or by making an untraceable cash transfer through a service such as Western Union.

Occasionally, the "jobs" advertised are legitimate. More often, they are fronts for money laundering or other dirty deeds. You may be asked to sell items via eBay, make sales calls for assorted products, or make bank deposits into certain accounts. Even more often than that, however, is that the moment your money changes hands, your so-called employer mysteriously disappears.

5. Bank alerts
You've gotten a voicemail saying your bank card has been suspended; please call this toll-free number to activate it. As a bank is a pretty secure place, you'll have to jump through a few hoops to prove that you really are the account holder, so you'll need to hand over all of your account details, your SSN, full name, date of birth, address, phone numbers ? the works.

By now, surely you've guessed: This one's a scam, too, and you've just handed over all of the required information for someone to open a bank account in your name before setting about destroying your credit history. They'll probably max out your credit card while they're at it, too.

While this style of bank scam is nothing new, it's recently undergone a bit of a makeover. As voicemail becomes more prevalent, scammers no longer need to speak directly to their victims. Instead, they ask you to dial a new number, making the call seem safer. By dialing the provided toll-free number, you're more likely to believe you're contacting a legitimate business, and all that good advice will evaporate.

Use your common sense whenever answering the phone. If something sounds unusual or too good to be true, don't fall for the trap! When in doubt, don't hand over any cash, personal details or other sensitive information.
