Does It Bother You That NBC Isn't Showing Some Sports Live?

published: 2012-07-29 22:47:19

Earlier this weekend, more than forty million Americans watched NBC?s coverage of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. The next night, almost thirty million watched Ryan Lochte punish Michael Phelps in their first swimming head-to-head. Both viewer totals were American Olympic records, and if they?re indicators of what is to come, NBC could be laughing all the way to the bank.

Unfortunately, it hasn?t all been roses for the network. Despite the big numbers, scores of fans have taken to Twitter and other places to complain about NBC?s decision to herd viewers toward primetime. Thanks to the events being in England, neither Phelps vs Lochte nor the Opening Ceremonies aired live. In fact, they?d been finished for hours by the time most Americans got around to seeing them. The delay doesn?t seem to be hurting audiences, but if Twitter loudmouths are to be believed, it?s certainly hurting enjoyment levels.

According to The New York Times, the majority of advertising revenue is raked in during primetime. Since NBC is concerned letting daytime viewers see the swimming and gymnastics might split iits viewers into two groups, it?s unwilling to risk losing money. Thus, the better sports are being shown on tape delay, or via online streams for those willing to put up with slow load times.

Personally, I don?t really mind some of the events on delay. Obviously, live is better, but I appreciate the seamlessness of the network having hours to package everything together to make it look pretty.

What about you? Does not watching an Olympic event live bother you? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below?

The Story behind the Name: The Marley Parasite

Dr. Paul Sikkel examining the Marley parasite. Credit: Paul Sikkel.

Dr. Paul Sikkel examining the Marley parasite. Credit: Niko Sikkel.

Once vibrant pockets of color, swarming with life, Caribbean coral reefs are in decline. Coral, a marine animal of seemingly infinite color, has fallen prey to bleaching and widespread disease. Since 1977, it?s estimated that 80% of the live coral in the Caribbean has deteriorated. Fish species in the Caribbean coral reefs have declined 5% a year for the past decade. These changes have been linked to climate change, overfishing, and other unknown pulls in the delicate balance that governs life in a coral reef. Research is grappling on one hand with the sheer diversity of life found in the Caribbean coral reef, while, at the same time, searching for answers to its decline. All in all, it?s a maddening time to be a marine biologist.

Dr. Paul Sikkel grew up on the beaches of Southern California, fascinated by reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. His passion for marine life began early, fueled by Wild Kingdom and The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, eventually cementing into a plan to pursue marine science. For a decade he watched hundreds, sometimes thousands of tiny parasites swirl around at his feet, never guessing that they would be the first new Caribbean parasite species described in over thirty years. The parasite was not only abundant but also exclusive to the Caribbean. He recently made news when, after discovering this new species of gnathiid, a fish parasite, he and his colleagues named the species Gnathia marleyi, in honor of Bob Marley. The response to naming a parasite after Bob Marley has been mixed. Several reporters have questioned the honor of having, as some have phrased it, ?a blood-sucking parasite? named after a legendary musician and activist.

Parasites, even when they can be directly linked to disease, don?t get much respect from biologists. This is surprising when you consider that parasitism is the most common animal lifestyle. By definition, parasites are organisms that cause harm to their host. But they do so much more than this. Parasites are an important food source, bridging together species that would ordinarily not have contact with one another. This is especially pronounced in the Caribbean Sea, where each creature plays a vital role in the balance of survival.

A great example of the importance of parasites are the gnathiids, a family of isopod crustaceans. These tiny parasites, no bigger than a quarter, comprise, along with other parasite species, the vast majority of total life in Caribbean coral reefs. There are almost two hundred species worldwide, including the new Marley parasite. As abundant as these parasites are, we still have little information on their life cycle. In fact, the Marley parasite is the one of the few Caribbean gnathiids whose life cycle has been fully described. Sikkel explains this attention to detail by acknowledging the importance of Bob Marley, ?We wanted to do the best job we could and make this the best piece of work we could produce, especially since it was named after Bob Marley.?

As an adult, the Marley parasite is harmless, but as juveniles they prey on those beautiful reef fish, sneaking up on them from behind coral rubble and attacking. In addition to sucking blood from colorful fish, they also provide a meal to cleaner fish. Paul describes their role as a ?broker that brings the client and the cleaner together.? Without these creatures, the balance between species of the coral reef would be horribly altered. Importantly, these parasites also play a key, albeit not well understood, role in the transmission of disease. Similar to a mosquito or tick, they are capable of transmitting bacteria and viruses. These two factors, the balance of marine organisms and the spread of disease, are key to our investigation of the decline of reef communities in the Caribbean. Could understanding how one parasite influences these factors help preserve a delicate ecosystem?

Sikkel is an assistant professor at Arkansas State University. He brings the study of marine life to university students who might not otherwise see the ocean in their landlocked state. He travels the world researching marine ecology, studying gnathiids in the Caribbean and Australia, and tracing the lionfish invasion back to its origin in Guam and the Philippines. Wherever he is, he says his watch is set to Caribbean time, quoting another favorite musician, Jimmy Buffet, ?I have a Caribbean soul I can barely control.? Naming the new parasite species after Bob Marley was done thoughtfully. Sikkel views it as ?one professional (marine parasite ecologist) honoring another (Caribbean Reggae musician).?

It may not always be pretty, but parasites bring species together. They play a key role in the health of Caribbean coral reefs, one whose further understanding may inform new strategies to preserve this precious habitat. Bob Marley said, ?The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.? The Marley parasite may be that very creature worth suffering for, an organism in need of unconditional love.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery

Depending on what task you ask it to perform, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Pro Edition does either an impressively stellar or a woefully earthbound job of bringing lost files back to life like the phoenix in its name. It has plenty of interface glitches, and it was unable to perform some tasks that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional ($149.99, 4 stars) performed easily, but it was also able to perform some recovery tasks even more smoothly than OnTrack's offering. When you need to recover lost data, you don't need to pay for the software until after it scans your disk to test whether it can retrieve your files. If it displays your lost files in its preview screen, it can almost certainly recover them, and you can then pay for the program online to enable the program's recovery features.

Starting With Stellar
When you start up Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, it offers a simple menu with three options, Drive Recovery, CD Recovery, and Photo Recovery. The Drive Recovery option is the most powerful, and leads to a full range of recovery methods. You first select the drive where you want to recover data, then choose among four methods: Quick Recovery, Deleted Recovery, Advanced Recovery, and Raw Recovery. The first method takes only a few seconds to scan a drive, the rest take longer. Raw Recovery can take as long as an hour to scan a very large disk. In my tests on an NTFS-formatted hard disk, the Quick Recovery method was enough to recover the deleted files I was looking for, but a disk with a scrambled directory structure would have required the Advanced or Raw methods.

As with rival products, I tested Stellar Phoenix with deleted documents on my hard disk and with a USB key that I had formatted to use as an emergency boot disk but which?before I formatted it?I had used to store backup copies of music files. In each case the program scanned the drive and displayed tree-structured lists of possibly-recoverable files.

Some Expertise Required
Like rival products, Stellar Phoenix requires you to know what you're doing when choosing files from these lists. For example, I searched for a deleted Word file named "Two Broadcasts.docx." The program listed a deleted file named "~$o Broadcasts.docx" but that wasn't the file I wanted?instead, as the file list showed me, it was a 162-byte file probably left behind by Word when I last edited the file. The file I actually wanted to recover was named "$RC9HQRN.docx," as I discovered by highlighting it in the program's list and looking at its content in the program's built-in previewer?an invaluable feature that OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional and Recuva both lack. In both those other programs, I had to save each deleted file to a disk and then open it in Word to see if it was the file I was looking for.

I had a harder time recovering MP3 files from a USB stick that I had reformatted, with the effect that none of the MP3 files were visible in Windows Explorer and apparently did not exist. OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional took ten minutes to scan my 8GB USB stick and let me recover hundreds of MP3 files to a different drive. OnTrack even displayed each file by its original name and let me open it in my default music-player software to make sure it was the file I wanted. In contrast, Stellar Phoenix took almost four hours to scan the same disk, and then listed nine music files as recoverable. Unfortunately, when I recovered those files and tried to listen to them, they all turned out to be corrupt and unplayable. Recuva also couldn't recover any music files from my USB stick, but at least it didn't claim to recover them.

Feature Light
But this doesn't mean that Stellar Phoenix might be the program you choose for recovering files from the NTFS disk in your computer. Stellar Phoenix includes a feature that lets you save recovered files to an FTP server instead of to a local disk. Unfortunately, most modern FTP servers use Secure FTP instead of the traditional FTP supported by Stellar Phoenix, so this feature may have only limited use in the real world. The program does include some other advanced features that match similar features in OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, for example a feature that creates a full image of a drive you can try to restore data from the cloned copy?a feature that comes in handy if the drive is getting physically flaky and might not be accessible at all at a later time.

A feature that worked less well was an advanced option that is supposed to show the S.M.A.R.T. status of a disk?what the disk reports about its own health. The program reported that the S.M.A.R.T. feature was disabled on my hard disk, but in fact it isn't disabled, and other utilities showed a full S.M.A.R.T. status report.

All in all, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is well worth a try when you're trying to recover lost files from your desktop or laptop and you don't have any recovery software already on hand. Just download the program, let it scan your disk, and pay for it if it can display your lost file in its preview pane. You can't lose, and you can certainly gain. But if you're preparing in advance for possible data disasters, you'll probably prefer OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional.

Paragon: A new RP idea.

They were known and loved throughout the land of Armorica, the heroic team of mighty warriors that fought the forces of darkness. The handsome, chivalrous knight, the beautiful elf, the wise-cracking rogue, the genius magic-user. They faced the villainous forces of the Dark Lord at every turn, defeating them....but never going so far as to kill them completely....because they were heroes and heroes did not do things like that.

They lived out their days adventuring across the fertile land of Armorica, where dragons flew through the sky and nature spirits spoke through the forest trees to guide their path. Every day was a new adventure.

And it was all a lie.

Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. Allow me to explain.

The year is 2219. It's an unseasonably cold summer, but city-wide climate control has had it covered. The War ended three years previous, and the nations have entered an era of comparative peace. The most popular sport is chimera racing, in which hybrid composite animals are ridden through obstacle courses in a competitive event, and the most popular TV show in the country, if not the western world, is Paragon, a fantasy series.

Paragon features a group of heroes and their adventurers in a fantasy landscape. Merchandise is everywhere and the studios that make it are extremely wealthy.

The stars of Paragon however, have no idea of their fame..because they have no idea that their world is a fake.

You see, as previous mentioned, three years previous, the nation was at war...in a sense. Almost a second Cold War that saw two large powers facing off, engaging in an arms race in an attempt to prepare for a terrible conflict. One of the major projects that went ahead was Project Paragon, an initiative in enhancing humanity with a view to creating soldiers that could easily out-perform any human being. A number of prototypes were constructed, but as the prototypes went into training, then peace was declared again.

The abrupt end of the war as a surprise to many, and left the military in a difficult situation. They had an assortment of extremely powerful individuals, untrained and unmanagable, designed for combat, but with no war to go to. It was a concern that simply releasing them into society would be too dangerous...and yet killing them would doubtlessly get out and cause a PR nightmare. With no war people were less cowed and frightened, and more liable to ask questions.

It was then that they were approached by an entertainment company. The CEO had had dealings with the militray before, having purchased their adaptive training environment, known as The Crucible, some months before. The Crucible was a large, domed area with an adaptive environment, that was it could be programmed to replicate any landscape with remarkable ease, generating landscape from organic material.

The company had an idea that they proposed. They would purchase these supersoldiers, they would give them false identities, false backgrounds, condition them to believe what was put into their heads, and they would use them for entertainment....and they would use the Crucible as a set. It would be the most revolutionary show that had ever been shown. A fantasy with characters who were real, who beleived what they were experiencing.

The project went ahead and Paragon was released to an audience who took to it immediately, and for years people watched as the characters, both the heroes and the villains, fought and adventured and won and lost...all none the wiser.

That was, until a voice started speaking to once. A voice from the world outside.

London police warn tourists over fake officers

LONDON (Reuters) - Police on Sunday warned tourists in London to beware of people pretending to be plain-clothes officers and stealing credit cards and cash during the Olympics, and said they arrested more touts for illegally reselling Games tickets.

The capital's Metropolitan Police Service said it arrested three men aged between 27 and 35 years on Saturday on charges of impersonating a police officer and conspiracy to steal.

"There have been a number of incidents where criminals have impersonated police officers to take money off unsuspecting tourists," said Detective Superintendent Steve Osborn.

"Officers would never take money from you, they would never take you to a cashpoint and ask you for money. They are unlikely to ask to see your bank cards and would never need to ask you for your pin number," he added.

Saturday's arrests were made in central London's Russell Square, where London 2012 organisers are running a transport service for media covering the Games.

Police said there was no direct connection between the arrests and the Olympics, but noted such con-men could be attracted to London by the lure of extra tourists during the Games.

The London force also said it had arrested another three people for illegally reselling Olympic tickets, known as touting in Britain and scalping in the United States, after nabbing 16 on Friday and Saturday.

Two of those held on Sunday were arrested outside Horse Guards Parade in central London, site of the beach volleyball tournament.

Three more people have been charged with various offences in connection with a mass alternative cycle ride that officers stopped near the Olympic stadium in east London on Friday evening, the police said.

Officers arrested 182 cyclists taking part in the "Critical Mass" ride for ignoring an order to stay away from the Olympic Park while the opening ceremony was underway.

All but four of those arrested have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Infusionsoft Automates Small Business Marketing to Avoid Chaos

Small business owners often have trouble piecing it all together. From daily marketing efforts to sales, there?s often a lot of disjointedness in terms of seeing how everything works together as part of a business strategy.

To refer to the?E-Myth?book by Michael Gerber, most of us are too busy working in?our businesses to work on?them. We simply don?t know how to get the eagle eye view of our business from a strategy standpoint, and to plan where we want to take the business in the future.

Infusionsoft gets that.

The all-in-one sales and marketing platform recognizes that small businesses often don?t have the resources to integrate processes to show them how they connect. And that means, for most, missed opportunity. ?CEO and Co-founder, Clate Mask, says:

?If you?re a one-man shop, you have different needs and challenges than a business with 25 employees. ?And you have widely different needs and challenges than a 100-person or 500-person company.?

Clate says that many small businesses attempt to improve their sales and marketing processes by piecing together a variety of point solutions, but that doesn?t fix the disjointedness.?Unlike big businesses, he says, small businesses don?t have the internal IT resources it takes to integrate all these points solutions, so their sales and marketing processes are never fully connected, leading to lost sales and wasted time.

Filling a Niche

Customer Relationship Management software is beginning to connect the dots for small businesses, and it?s rapidly evolving. CRM has changed from being, as Director of Product Marketing, Rebecca Sprynczynatyk, says:

?A static repository of customer data into a key source of business intelligence and customer insight.?

It?s that intelligence that helps business owners get the big picture.

With Infusionsoft?s platform, for example, a customer can capture data about leads and customers, including where the lead came from, how long they spent on the company?s website, what they?re doing on social media and how they make purchases. Sales, too, are tracked, providing valuable data for small businesses.

Infusionsoft

What does this data mean for small biz? It provides ample information about what?s working and what?s not, which helps a business better target its efforts and find more opportunities for growth. ?Says Sprynczynatyk:

?Having all of this data in one place gives businesses the ability to see [a] 360-view of individual customers, which can be used for advanced segmentation and targeted marketing.?

How Infusionsoft Connects to Small Business

Infusionsoft?s primary focus is on the small biz customer. In fact, the company has?more than 9,800 small business clients representing 35,000 users in 62 countries. But simply providing CRM solutions isn?t all the brand does to connect.

Each year, the company hosts InfusionCon in Phoenix, where 1,500 small business owners meet for three days to get valuable tips and tools from the likes of?Gary Vaynerchuk, Chris Brogan and Pam Slim.

Infusionsoft recently launched its Marketplace, which connects business owners to apps, consultants and other businesses that can help them grow. And its acquisition of CustomerHub?? a membership site creator ? in the fall of 2011, further embedded Infusionsoft into the small business world.

Infusionsoft

The company recently announced its ?Battle of the Apps? contest, encouraging developers to create apps and plugins that enhance an Infusionsoft user?s experience. The pot for winners ? $20,000.

The company participates in other small business events, including the?Small Business Influencer Awards?(they?re a sponsor), the GROWCO and Inc. 500/5000 conferences and the Arizona Entrepreneurship Conference. Infusionsoft also travels the country and to London every year educating small businesses on how to be better marketers during its 2012 Small Business Success Tour.

The Future of CRM, According to Infusionsoft

Technology accelerates small business tools, and it?s no surprise Infusionsoft frequently comes out with new releases that include useful features for businesses. The company says it?s working on?its lead scoring capabilities to make it even easier for sales teams to find qualified leads based on their behaviors. This should, I expect, help cut down on chasing the wrong leads and focusing on leads that have higher scores in terms of behaviors that are more likely to turn into sales.

Infusionsoft is one of the key brands showing their support of small businesses by sponsoring the?Small Business Influencer Awards.

Every new coach wants to put his own stamp on a team.

Mike Mularkey apparently wants to imprint his with a sledge hammer.

The Jaguars coach told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union he planned to fine players $10,000 if they talk about injuries to the media.

Mularkey delivered that news in last night?s team meeting.

?They saw a lot of numbers last night,? Mularkey said. ?One of them, it was up there more than once, was about speaking about injuries. [Head trainer]?Mike Ryan talked about it, I had it up there more than once. Coordinators were told prior to that meeting every two weeks, two to three weeks I want you to stand in front of that room and tell them we?re not going to talk about injuries.

?Even if mom says, ?How are you feeling?? If you tell you mom, go call coach Mularkey. I?m going overboard.?

Mularkey wasn?t totally serious about the fines for talking to parents, but apparently to everyone else.

?Anything I know about a guy, anything I know is hurting on him, any comment he makes will play into how they attack a team or a position,? Mularkey said. ?I just don?t think it?s anybody else?s business. ? If I feel like it?s going to jeopardize us or compromise us, I will not talk about specific injuries. Right now we?re really not in a position where I don?t feel free to talk about them because I feel pretty good about our team right now. But I will be the only voice.?

Listen, that?s fine to play tough guy. The Jaguars could use a little order (as long as it doesn?t come with Jack Del Rio?s ax).

But maybe, just maybe, they?d be better off getting their quarterback to quit looking so skittish in the pocket, or having Justin Blackmon call a cab, or trying to get their best player into camp on time.

Call me crazy, but I think any of those things might be more important to the Jaguars improving more so than making sure somebody doesn?t tell Vito Stellino their ankle hurts.

Video: Pennsylvania is 9th state to enact voter ID law

>>> they won a vote and a pennsylvania voter i.d. law could get in the way. democrats in montgomery county just northwest of federphiladelphia are holding an event tomorrow for anyone who needs an i.d. card .

>> good afternoon, richard, how are you?

>> very well, thank you. last night you had a packed forum in the area to help edge case those interested in understanding what the requirements are to register to vote and the voter i.d. requirements. how did that go?

>> well, we had 200 people there. fundamentally and unfortunately i think most of the people that were there were democrats. the republicans don't seem to be so worried about it. but the fact is that it went well except for the fact that it continued to cause -- the answers caused a tremendous amount of confusion. nobody really understands exactly what it is that they can and cannot present. people are scared in terms of -- i had94-year-old man come to me recently who was really upset. he had voted since he was 21 years old, 73 years. he didn't know what to do because he couldn't drive anymore, he didn't have a driver's license. it was troubling him tremendously just to go out and try to get a picture i.d. was becoming a problem for him.

>> what did you tell him?

>> i told him as it turned out we went -- i sat down with him, went through his wallet and found a picture i.d. he could utilize. but he had a tremendous amount of anxiety.

>> he didn't know that he actually had the proper i.d.

>> no. he lost his license two years ago because of his age.

>> i understand you have another event tomorrow.

>> i we do. we have a clinic in the western part of the county. we're teaching people how to go door knocking, getting mailers ready. the problem is we have to contact every single voter. a lot of voters who think they have the i.d. may not. it's not just the i.d. but the names on the voter i.d. card may be different than on their driver's license.

>> there is a logistical problem certainly that you're seeing at the moment. give as you sense here, you're on the ground there. the philadelphia city paper is saying up to 20% of pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised as a result of these voter i.d. laws. that's on the higher end of what we've heard in the past and the number swells to 43% in philadelphia. what's your sense of how large of a problem this is?

>> look, this is a solution looking for a problem. it goes against the very essence of our democracy. it's immoral, it's unethical and it's wrong. in montgomery county , which is very affluent, we believe it will probably affect somewhere around 9% of the population in terms of of the registered voters or about 48,000. and some of those people will be able to figure it out and some won't and it's just an absolute mess. the governor when asked questions about what kind of i.d. should be -- was okay, couldn't answer the question himself. it's his legislation.

>> marcel, on the flip side the "new york times," nate silver , says that the voter i.d. law in pennsylvania could potentially swing the vote towards the gop by about 1.2%. are those other numbers not very accurate?

>> i'm not sure. clearly the legislation has only one purpose and that is to help the republicans and hurt the democrats. but what it does is it hurts senior, it hurts young people , people who don't drive. i think what is also done for us is it's really motivated our people. we will be knocking on every single door in this county. we are calling every single day going through with folks to understand and we're going to try to minimize that and hope that the courts do the root thing and declare this law unconstitutional, which is what it is. marcel groen, thank you for your time today.

>> thank you for having me.

The Money Update ? How To Avoid Sabotaging Your Retirement

Throughout life there are many financial pitfalls and mistakes to be made that could negatively impact your savings and your retirement fund, avoiding some of the mistakes now could save you some serious financial headaches later on life.? For example, some of the common pitfalls include:

Spending Your Retirement Savings To Bankroll Your Children

Sabotage Your RetirementChildren are some of the single most wonderful blessings a person can have during his or her lifetime, but can also be one of the most significant financial drains on your retirement savings.? Often times as parents it can be difficult to prioritize your own future and you may push off your own retirement savings for little Bobby or Suzzie who needs thousands of dollars every year to pursue dance, or karate, a new car, college, not to mention the $30,000 wedding they?ve always wanted.? These are all wonderful things, and as parents we desire our children to have the best, but it should not come at the expense of your own retirement planning and savings.? Bobby and Suzzie may not care as much about dance and karate as adults, when their own parents have become their financial dependents due to inadequate retirement savings.

Single Currency Homes Often Are Behind In Retirement Savings

According to statistics 1 out of 4 single income homes are well behind where they need to be in saving for retirement, vs. 17% of dual income homes.? This could be a simple factor of more households are choosing to have both husband and wife work causing the standard of living bar to be set a little higher, or it could be due to inflation and a struggling economy making it nearly impossible for single income home to get by. Regardless of the reason, your retirement portfolio will be easier to manage if both members of the family contribute to the family income.

?Paying Off Debt Instead Of Saving For Retirement

Often times people make the mistake of paying off their school loans, car payments, or dream home mortgage before they even begin to salt away money for retirement.? While it is important to be debt free, if you avoid all savings for retirement you often miss out on many years of compounding interest by not starting to save young.

Not Calculating How Much You will Need To Save For Retirement

Many couples have no idea how much they will need to save for retirement in order to maintain their pre-retirement lifestyles.? If you have a healthy pension plan on average you will need to plan for 60-80% of your preretirement income to be able to live at a desirable standard of living in retirement.? Also, you need to save enough for at least 25-40 years of retirement.? You want your retirement savings to outlive you, not the other way around.

Choosing Inappropriate Investments For Your Age And Risk Appetite Can Sabotage Your Retirement

The younger you are when you begin saving the more risks you will be able to take in your investments.? As you age you will need to reduce your risk exposure and make sure that you do not put all your eggs in one basket.? This will ensure that your retirement money will be at your disposal when you most need it.

Retirement savings can be really tricky, especially in an economy where no investment appears ?safe? and very few are generating the desired profit many would hope for.? For more information on retirement planning and on retirement designated investments visit theannuityupdate.com?

Reducing CO2: Research shows chemical and economic feasibility for capturing carbon dioxide directly from air

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? With a series of papers published in chemistry and chemical engineering journals, researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have advanced the case for extracting carbon dioxide directly from the air using newly-developed adsorbent materials.

The technique might initially be used to supply carbon dioxide for such industrial applications as fuel production from algae or enhanced oil recovery. But the method could later be used to supplement the capture of CO2 from power plant flue gases as part of efforts to reduce concentrations of the atmospheric warming chemical.

In a detailed economic feasibility study, the researchers projected that a CO2 removal unit the size of an ocean shipping container could extract approximately a thousand tons of the gas per year with operating costs of approximately $100 per ton. The researchers also reported on advances in adsorbent materials for selectively capturing carbon dioxide.

"Even if we removed CO2 from all the flue gas, we'd still only get a portion of the carbon dioxide emitted each year," noted David Sholl, a professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. "If we want to make deep cuts in emissions, we'll have to do more -- and air capture is one option for doing that."

The Georgia Tech research into air capture techniques was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Papers describing the economic analysis and new adsorbent materials were published in the journals ChemSusChem, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters and the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Carbon dioxide from large sources such as coal-burning power plants or chemical facilities account for less than half the worldwide emissions of the gas, noted Christopher Jones, also a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. Much of the remaining emissions come from mobile sources such as buses, cars, planes and ships, where capture would be much more costly per ton.

Jones is collaborating with a startup company -- Global Thermostat -- to establish a pilot plant to demonstrate the direct air capture technique. The technology for capturing carbon dioxide from the air would be similar to that required for removing the gas from smokestack emissions, though CO2 concentrations in flue gases are dramatically higher than those in the atmosphere.

Flue gases contain about 15 percent carbon dioxide, while CO2 is found in the atmosphere at less than 400 parts per million. That's a factor of 375, notes Sholl, who said the difference in capture efficiency could be partially made up by eliminating the need to transport CO2 removed from flue gas to sequestration locations.

"Because the atmosphere is generally consistent, you could operate the capture equipment wherever you had a sequestration site," he said. "I don't think air capture will ever produce carbon dioxide as cheaply as capturing it from flue gas. But on the other hand, it doesn't seem to be wildly more expensive, either."

Based on his work with Global Thermostat, Jones believes that the costs of an optimized process will prove to be even lower than the estimates of Sholl's team. "Sholl's paper is important because it shows that direct capture of CO2 from the air can be up to ten times less expensive than had been estimated by others," he said. "Process improvements based on their initial modeling study could bring costs down even further."

In its economic analysis, Sholl's team considered all of the energy that would have to be put into the capture process. The cost estimates did not include the capital cost of establishing the capture facilities because the technology is still too new for reliable projections.

The batch extraction process modeled by the Georgia Tech team involves blowing air through a ceramic honeycomb structure coated with dry amino-modified silica material to capture the CO2, then flowing steam through the structure to release the gas. The technique could produce carbon dioxide that is roughly 90 percent pure.

"The technical challenges are similar to those of flue gas capture: demonstration at scale, demonstration of long-term adsorbent stability and demonstration of process feasibility and stability," Jones said. "Increased funding for air capture work is needed, because most of the funding invested in carbon capture over the past decade has been directed at flue gas capture."

Sholl and Jones have also been contributing to work on flue gas treatment, conducting research into adsorbent materials, including theoretical and experimental research into adsorbent alternatives such as metal-organic framework (MOF) materials.

Among their recent papers on direct capture of CO2 from the air are:

  • A Journal of the American Chemical Society paper that described the role of zirconium in producing more efficient amine-based adsorbents. "Past work has focused on maximizing the amount of CO2 captured per gram of adsorbent by adding ever-increasing amounts of amines," Jones explained. "We are the first to show that an alternate strategy is to change the oxide support that the amines lay on, and for a fixed amount of amine, each amine works more efficiently."
  • A paper published in ChemSusChem describing the role played by primary, secondary and tertiary amines in capturing carbon dioxide from ultra-dilute gases like air. "We showed conclusively that primary amines are responsible for CO2 capture from the air, that secondary amines work to some degree, and that tertiary amines don't absorb from air in any appreciable amount," Jones said.
  • A paper in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research that describes detailed cost estimates for the air capture process.

Jones believes air capture should be among the options developed to address global warming produced by increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

"Initial demonstrations of the air capture process will probably be targeted for applications that can use the carbon dioxide for commercial purposes," Jones said. "As the technology matures, we envision implementing CO2 capture from the air as a climate stabilization strategy, in parallel with CO2 capture from flue gas and enhanced utilization of alternative energies."

Syria acknowledges it has chemical weapons

A Free Syrian Army soldier rips a portrait of President Bashar Assad at the Bab Al-Salam border crossing to Turkey on Sunday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated 11:05 a.m. ET: The Syrian government threatened Monday to use its chemical and biological weapons in the event the country faced foreign intervention, marking the first time Bashar Assad?s regime has acknowledged it possesses weapons of mass destruction.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi stressed, however, that Damascus would not use its unconventional arms against its own citizens. The announcement comes as Syria faces international isolation, a tenacious rebellion that has left at least 19,000 people dead and threats by Israel to attack to prevent such weapons from falling into rebel hands.

Assad's forces have launched fierce counter-offensives, reflecting his determination to hold on to power even at great cost and he has dismissed an Arab offer to grant him a safe exit in return for a swift step down.

"Any chemical or bacterial weapons will never be used ... during the crisis in Syria regardless of the developments," Makdissi, speaking in English, said.

"These weapons are stored and secured by Syrian military forces and under its direct supervision and will never be used unless Syria faces external aggression,? he added.

A first? Helicopter gunships bombard Syrian capital

Desperate regime?
Damascus has not signed a 1992 international convention that bans the use, production or stockpiling of chemical weapons, but officials in the past have denied that it had any stockpiles.

As violence escalates in Syria, insurgents have said they fear Assad's forces will resort to non-conventional weapons as they seek to claw back rebel gains across the country.

Government troops launched an offensive against opposition forces in Syria days after rebels killed some of President Assad's top deputies. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

Syria's decision to reveal the long suspected existence of its chemical weapons suggests a desperate regime deeply shaken by an increasingly bold revolt that has scored a string of successes in the past week, including a stunning bomb attack that killed four high-level security officials, the capture of several border crossings and sustained offensives on the regime strongholds of the capital Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, the country?s most populous city.

Syria is believed to have nerve agents as well as mustard gas, Scud missiles capable of delivering these lethal chemicals and a variety of advanced conventional arms, including anti-tank rockets and late-model portable anti-aircraft missiles.

A senior U.S. intelligence official told The Associated Press on Friday the Syrians have moved chemical weapons material from the country's north, where the fighting was fiercest, apparently to both secure it, and to consolidate it, which U.S. officials considered a responsible step.

But there has also been a rise in activity at the installations, so the U.S. intelligence community is intensifying its monitoring efforts to track the weapons and try to figure out whether the Syrians are trying to use them, the official told the AP on condition of anonymity to discuss the still-evolving investigation.

NYT: Both sides claim progress as Syrian violence continues

Syria's uprising began in March 2011 when the government violently tried to quash protests calling for political reform. As dissent spread and the death toll rose, scores of rebel groups formed to fight government troops, and the conflict evolved into a civil war.

Threat from Israel
Western countries and Israel have also expressed fears that chemical weapons could fall into the hands of militant groups as Assad's authority erodes.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he feared that chaos following Assad's fall could allow Hezbollah, which seeks Israel's destruction, to access Syria's chemical arsenal.

Netanyahu told Fox News Sunday that "this is something we'll have to act to stop if the need arises."

No evidence has emerged of Hezbollah involvement in Syria's unrest.

Two more Syrian generals flee into Turkey

Defying Arab foreign ministers who on Sunday offered Assad a "safe exit" if he stepped down swiftly, the Syrian leader has waged a counter-attack in the capital to defeat rebels district by district.

Arab League ministers meeting in Doha urged the opposition and the rebel Free Syrian Army to form a transitional government, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani told a news conference in Doha.

Makdissi condemned calls for Assad to step down during a meeting of Arab foreign ministers in Qatar over the weekend, calling it a "flagrant intervention" in Syria's internal affairs.

Fighting in Aleppo
On Monday, the army shelled rebel forces in Aleppo and stormed the southern Damascus neighborhood of Nahr Aisha, breaking into shops and houses and burning some of them, activists said.

Assad's forces have reasserted control over several Damascus areas since they seized back the central Midan district on Friday, following a devastating bomb attack that killed four of Assad's top security officials.

Government forces have lost ground outside cities, ceding control of four border posts on the Turkish and Iraqi borders.

In Aleppo, activists said residents were fleeing the rebel-held districts of Al-Haideriya, Hanano and Sakhour after army shelling and clashes between rebels and government forces. ?

The fighting in Damascus, Aleppo and the eastern city of Deir al-Zor has been some of the fiercest yet and showed Assad's determination to avenge last week?s bomb attack.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin answers your questions about Syria

Fighting continued for a fifth day near key government installations, indicating that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's control is faltering. As the opposition advances, Russia and China still refuse to support a resolution calling for tougher sanctions. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Bashar Assad's father, Hafez Assad, seized power in a 1970 coup and ruled for three decades until his death. Originally an Air Force officer and member of the Syrian Baath Party, Hafez al-Assad gradually introduced Alawite rule into every sector of Syrian government and society.

Activists: At least 20 men executed
In another development, government forces executed at least 20 men, aged approximately 20 to 30, activists said by phone from Mezzeh on Sunday.

"Most had bullet holes, one with as many as 18. Three had their hands tied behind their back. Some of the men were in their pajamas. Several had their legs broken or fingers missing. Others were stabbed with knifes," Bashir al-Kheir, one of the activists, told Reuters.

Analysts: Russia will be big loser if Assad falls

Opposition and rebel sources have also told Reuters the guerrilla fighters in the capital may lack the supply lines to remain there for long and may have to make tactical withdrawals.

The neighborhood of Barzeh, one of three northern areas hit by helicopter fire, was overrun by troops commanded by President Assad's brother, Maher al-Assad, 41, who is widely seen as the muscle maintaining the Assad?s rule.

Crucial role
Maher's role has become more crucial since Assad's defense and intelligence ministers, a top general and his powerful brother-in-law were killed by the bomb on Wednesday, part of an assault by rebels seeking to turn the tables in a revolt inspired by Arab Spring uprisings in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.

Syrian rebels seize border post after fierce battle

Assad has not spoken in public since the bombing, but the Israeli military said it believed he was still in Damascus and retained the loyalty of his armed forces.

Regional and Western powers fear the conflict might become a full-blown sectarian war that could spill across borders, but have yet to find a coherent strategy to prevent that outcome.

NBC News staff, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Virtual PBX Telephone Systems: Facts You Should Know in Doing the Transition

Virtual PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is modifying the communication landscape for small-scale and flourishing business groups. Better known as hosted PBX, it's an advanced phone system run by business voip services. With the continuing advent of new developments in the telecoms industry, companies finally possess options to pricey on-premise public switched telephone networks. A hosted PBX system gives exceptional cost savings in terms of funding, supplies, time and human resources. By just implementing VoIP technology, telephone service providers are ready to deliver high quality services.

Recent research have revealed that hosted PBX systems are now being put into practice rapidly. Such is the scenario among small and expanding business agencies in the United States and Canada. While more and more businesses gradually turn to virtual PBX (Virtual Private Exchange) for affordable business phone systems, a special question arises. Exactly when is the best time move to this kind of telephone systems?

What exactly is Virtual PBX?

Linking all enterprise communications to a hosted PBX system is a cheap way to take care of all telephone calls, faxes and e-mail.

Companies that sign up for hosted services seem to be a lot more professional. This sets the tone for future transactions with customers. If it comes to image, initial impressions have a massive impact. Small-scale and start up businesses may project a big business image by outsourcing phone services. By using a virtual telephone system, the service provider manages all communications in everyday business operations.

PBX is the term for the customary switchboard which deals with a business' communications. Business VoIP refers to modern-day services hosted on remote servers, not the actual location of the business. All these virtual services are comprehensive and may include voicemail, call forwarding, free online fax and a virtual assistant.

What should you consider just before converting your phone system?

Before you register for Virtual PBX, you have to ensure that you are making the perfect investment. Think about the subsequent ideas:

If you've determined your enterprise communication requirements, contact your telephone service provider to switch systems. The rewards you can get from Virtual PBX may help make the transition worthwhile. Even though professionalism and economics are both the reasons for taking the virtual path, they're not just the reasons. Connecting all enterprise communications to computers and the Web can help make all business far more efficient and viable.

??When we are self-conscious, we cannot be wholly aware; we must throw ourselves out first. The throwing ourselves away is the act of creativity. So, when we wholly concentrate, like a child in play, or an artist at work, then we share in the act of creating. We not only escape time, we also escape our self-conscious selves.?
? A Circle of Quiet: The Crosswicks Journal?Book 1 by Madeleine L?Engle

We must take action to create our art. We must play at it, as a child approaches playing. I love this Madeleine L?Engle quote, and want to share with you how we can escape into our art. How to open the door into the sumptuous world of our own creativity.

I?m assuming you know what your art is, that you know how you want to apply your creative energies, but you feel stymied in some way. If you don?t know what your creative art is, then I suggest you ?Remember and Identify? it. You could also read about Spark Seven: The Passion for Writing. (Coming soon! Or you can read it directly in Overcome Writer?s Block here.)

What was your favorite game or pastime as a child? Think back to how you spent your time. For example, I loved playing Olly Olly Oxen Free, a complex version of hide-and-go-seek, with friends and siblings. We loved playing Capture the Flag, exploring the nearby wine grape vineyards, and playing in abandoned fields full of burrs and blackberry brambles. I also loved curling up with a good adventure story, like Misty of Chincoteague or The Lost Prince.

Time to take action. Any action will do. Okay, almost any. If you need more clear direction, then below are six ways to get out of your own way. Do one, or do them all. The point here is to get out of your own way and create in a place of love, enjoyment and play.

Way #1 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? Play

With reading, I loved, and still love, diving into another world, so completely different from my own, and coming out of the story refreshed and so in love with that other place, it makes this place, my own place, stand out as foreign, and intriguing. I?m always on an adventure and this I love.

What did you love about the games you played? Dig beneath the pleasure and describe its elements.

Way #2 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? Identify

I?m in love with my current piece of fiction: its characters, setting, and problems. I can?t wait to return to that world so that I can sit in the angst of the problems I?ve created and move my characters to some kind of resolution. I love that exploration. Because although I know where I want my characters to go, I don?t know exactly how they will travel there, or if they will really succeed in their missions.

Identify the thing you love about your writing, your art. Identify it and allow yourself to sink your teeth into it.

As Madeleine L?Engle, says, ?We must throw ourselves out first,? and become our art creating itself.

Way #3 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? Time Limits

Set the timer for 20 minutes. (More or less is fine, though I?ve found 20 minutes to be optimal for writing.) Write about all the reasons why you can?t write. If you find yourself writing about other things, great. The point is to move pen across page without stopping until the buzzer rings. Or, write about what you want your writing project to really be like.

Way #4 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? Tracking

You are ready to work. The computer is on, or notebook and pen or pencil in hand. Now it?s time to note your starting time, page number and starting word count. A spreadsheet can help you just do that, a tracking sheet that helps you, well, track. Not just what you?ve done and for how long, it tracks that you?ve done it! Breathe! Congratulations! Showing up and following through on your creating is what?s it?s all about.

Way #5 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? MAP

As leadership trainer and friend, Greg Norte, taught me, a MAP is a Major Accountability Partner. Maybe this person is a life partner, a business partner, colleague or creativity buddy. Call them at the start and at the finish to report in, celebrate your successes and shore up any challenges. Weekly is best. I have MAPs in all areas of my life. Go team!

Way #6 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? List of Twenty

This is one of my favorite exercises, appealing to both the left and right?brainers out there. This exercise can be used for any kind of creative project, and yes, of course, writing. It?s great, in fact, for story and idea generation in any area. There are five steps to implementing this simple yet powerful tool.

Step One: Set your intention for the list. In other words, decide what you?re going to use the list for. For example, you could decide to list out twenty possible plot ideas, terrible scenarios for your hapless characters to fall into, or twenty ideas associated with a big lifestyle change. Or the question ?What do I really want with this creative project??

Step Two: Get ready! Number your page down the left hand side, 1-20.

Step Three: Get set! Know that you will list twenty items, even if you repeat yourself, even if it doesn?t make sense what you write.

Step Four: Go! Write your list of twenty. Don?t stop until you?ve reached the end.

Step Five: Read your list with amusement and neutrality, then congratulate yourself. You did it. If you are so inspired, pick one item and work on it right now.

Way #7 of Getting Out of Your Own Way ? Fieldtrip

When I need inspiration, and something to jolt me into action, I take a little field trip down the hill to my neighborhood, Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, CA. Like today, I took a fieldtrip to one of my favorite coffee shops, Peets? Coffee, sat in the little plaza and enjoyed the mural, and the passersby while I wrote. Then went to that wonderful resource, the public library, and popped into a fun new store in the neighborhood, Issues, with their wacky and wonderful magazines and newspapers from around the world.

Where can you go to mix things up, get inspiration, spur yourself to action, feed your fire? It may only be a seven-and-a-half minute walk away.

Great! Hopefully by now you have been inspired to action, to choose one or a few or all of the above exercises to help you ?wholly concentrate? and ?share in the act of creating? with your art, and to lovingly and kindly get the hell out of your own way.

Go be creative! Go Play!
