Editorial: Rick Perry does California a favor

Texas Gov. Rick Perry was scheduled to be in California the start of this week. The Associated Press reported the governor planned to meet with executives in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Orange County.

Gov. Perry's office said he would meet with leaders in the high-tech, biotech, financial, insurance and entertainment industries. The visit follows a modest radio ad campaign launched last week ? which then spawned nationwide media attention ? aimed at promoting the Lone Star State's lower taxes and friendlier business climate.

We get his point. California's economy would amount to the world's 10th-largest. It remains a magnet for the creative, the innovative and the entrepreneurial. California is known for either spawning, nurturing or growing such industries as computers, motion pictures, winemaking, aerospace and life sciences (including medical devices).

Some 53 Fortune 500 companies are based in the Golden State, including a half-dozen or so in Orange County. More than a few California companies are among the world's most-recognized brands, among them Apple, Walt Disney, Google, eBay, Gap, VISA and Yahoo.

POLITICAL CARTOONS

"I have a message for California businesses," Gov. Perry said in his 30-second spot. "Come check out Texas. Our low taxes, sensible regulations and fair legal system are just the thing to get your business moving to Texas."

We expect Gov. Perry will find a largely receptive audience for his pitch, but our stronger hope is that his campaign serves as a loud and clear wakeup call for California Gov. Jerry Brown and the rest of California's government. They need to accept that California's reputation among business owners needs to improve if our state is to deflect the advances of aggressive, business-friendly states like Texas.

Steps should include lowering the tax burden on California businesses from one of the highest among the 50 states to somewhere in the middle. There should be an overhaul of state business regulations to ensure they are both necessary and cost effective, along with revising California laws routinely used as weapons by politically motivated plaintiffs to attack businesses.

While some view his California trip as a poaching expedition, we believe Gov. Perry is doing our state a service. He embodies why Gov. Brown and the Legislature can no longer take the state's business community for granted.

If the Golden State doesn't take care of its businesses, other states will.
